Electoral Reform

Ontario’s voters deserve better representation at Queen’s Park. Our current first-past-the-post voting system does not reflect the political will of all voters because it discounts the votes of everyone who did not vote for a winning candidate. The Green Party strongly encourages Ontarians to vote in favour of the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) system recommended by the Citizen’s Assembly. MMP creates a stronger democracy with more choice, fairer election results and better representation for all citizens. MMP has already been used successfully in several countries, including Germany, Scotland and New Zealand, where it has produced stable and effective governments.

Local supporters of the Progressive Conservatives may not want to support a mixed member proportional electoral system because this is viewed as a "safe" tory riding, but they do so at the peril of losing support for their party elsewhere. They should ask themselves how many seats did the PC party get in Toronto in the last provincial election? How about in the North? Far fewer than their share of the popular vote. MMP will have a balancing effect and fewer voters will walk away from the ballot box thinking they have wasted their vote, anywhere.
We are disappointed in the Liberal approach to the MMP referendum. Under the leadership of Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, the Citizens Assembly on Electoral Reform studied electoral systems from around the world, rejected the first-past-the-post system and recommended the mixed member proportional system. The Liberals should back the results of the process they initiated and trust in the citizens who worked diligently to craft a unique formula for Ontario.
