Local Sustainability

The push toward globalization has caused unnecessary economic and social hardship for many people in our local communities. The Green Party of Ontario believes we can restore the health and vitality of our communities by supporting each other through simple everyday actions: by buying locally produced food and other goods; by walking, cycling or riding public transit instead of driving short distances; by working in the communities where we live; and by conserving energy and resources wherever possible. By working together in our local communities, we can make a difference.

There is a loud demand to get on with the job of extending highway 407 eastward to highway 35/115 to relieve congestion on highway 401. We agree that too many cars on the 401 is dangerous and wasteful. Driving from Clarington to Toronto, you can expect at least one slowdown at best of times, and several during rush hour. However if you've been commuting, you've noticed that widening the 401 doesn't seem to solve the congestion problem. Sometimes, it seems worse. It's simple: developers build subdivisions faster than the highway widens, and commuters travel greater and greater distances at ever slower speed.

Ten years from now, when the effects of global warming become even more painfully obvious than they are now, will we be glad we paved over valuable farmland for subdivisions?
