Time to Cancel Costly Nuclear Plans for Good - Green Party of Ontario

Medial Release 29.06.2009 - 13:05

The Green Party of Ontario is applauding this morning's announced suspension of nuclear procurement by the Liberal Government.

TORONTO ON, June 29nd, 2009 – The Green Party of Ontario is applauding this morning's announced suspension of nuclear procurement by the Liberal Government. Greens have been speaking out over the costs of constructing new nuclear plans in Ontario and, as predicted by financial institutions and environmentalists, those costs have come in over budget.

"Today we have proof that nuclear energy is not competitive," said Frank de Jong, Leader of the Green Party of Ontario.

"Nuclear as a cornerstone of the Liberal energy plan, with support from the PC caucus, has failed. The Green Party's long-time stance on cost responsibility and green energy is in line with public wishes and economic and environmental realities," he said.

"The future of our energy planning must be in energy efficiency, renewables and smart grid technology," said Judy Smith-Torrie, Deputy Leader and Energy Issue Advocate.
